I wish we could wear scrubs on the ambulance. |
Anyway, I'll stop there with that. If I don't, this post will get old very fast. I'm so far behind on my blog, but I haven't had time to do blog writing at work since I started working at Action. We're mostly busy in the OVMA (Ossipee Valley Mutual Aid, the same area I worked out of before when I was based in Tamworth), and even when we're not, there there are too many people at the Ossipee Base to hog the computer. It's just different now. Since I'm now working 3 jobs (and 4th soon), I've actually had some extra money so I finally broke down and bought a Chromebook so that I have my own "laptop" again. Yay! It's a refurbished Lenovo Chromebook that I only paid $75 for, but I love it so far. I've literally been without a laptop for 5 years since my Macbook died, and the iMac died over a year ago. It's been frustrating. I couldn't go all crazy, but a Chromebook was all I needed anyway. And now I can write my blog at home! Yay! I just took this for you! Haha.
So wow. Where to begin? It seems like so much has happened, but it really hasn't. Nothing has really changed for me since this started. Ok, well, except I quit a job in the middle of it while people are desperate to work. In reality, me declining the Brewster offer did actually give someone else a job they were not going to have. But other than that, life has gone on as usual. I'm still "racing" almost every weekend. They might only be virtual races, but they sure as hell feel more difficult than real ones. I'm still working at the hospital two days a week. I'm still running 5-6 days a week. I was almost always alone before this so that part is nothing new to me. I'm still buying beer at Saco River Brewing. Haha. Just curbside now, but I like it! I'm still working two 24s Monday and Wednesday. I'm staying pretty busy and have WAY more socializing than I would prefer. No more hiding in "my" office at work in the quiet. It's a nice change, but it can get old being surrounded by people all day at work. I like solitude.
Things that have changed: Well, I'm actually not worrying about money for once. My pay increase at Action has made a huge difference. Plus, the extra cash from working at Memorial. I've worked a few shifts at Conway Fire, too. And the stimulus check that finally arrived paid my last oil bill and will pay for my cars to get fixed so they can pass inspection. But, honestly, without that stimulus money, I was doing ok for once. It's feels really good not living off $11/hour anymore. I like to think those of us who have lived barely above water are probably doing better than most right now, especially mentally. Life was a struggle before this so you don't feel the hit as much.
The biggest change has been John's isolation and schooling from home. It is the absolute worst format for him, and he's struggling to get his work done. We're constantly battling over it. He has had very little contact with other people in over a month. I don't think he's talked to another human in person other than me in weeks, and I'm working a lot. He still does pull-ups and chin-ups, but other than that, he only gets walks in Fri-Sun when I have time. I do feel a lot of guilt, but I'm thankful for the contact with his friends online and his interaction with people on the video games. Criticize that all you want, but until you're a REAL single mom with absolutely no help whatsoever, I don't want to hear it. I'm nowhere near perfect.

Found Phoenix in John's bed while he was asleep |
Um, no. Not at all! Why would he assume everyone feels this way? I have to say that I'm really glad I didn't give up on the article, though, because it's a good one with a lot of truth. Prepare for the Ultimate Gaslighting.
I don't know what it is, though. My disappointment in Americans in general? The way our country has brought up generation after generation of people who can't think for themselves or be comfortable being alone. We're just a nation of dissatisfied beings who've been taught to live inside of a box. Change is bad. Change is scary. So that when the world turns upside down, all we can do is either lie in bed and feel sorry for ourselves or be in complete denial of the whole thing and put everyone else's lives at risk out of ignorance. This is all easy for me to say. I haven't lived a typical life at all. It started off that way, but I steered course as soon as I caught wind that the path I was headed down was someone else's idea. I've had to adapt to so many different things in my life that times like this don't phase me. But these most certainly are weird times, man. No denying that. But at least I can still get a flat white at Starbucks and buy new shoes. Maybe this guy now gets a taste of what it's like to live like us. Welcome to what has been our lower class world, buddy. Hopefully a walk in our shoes will change the attitude of the middle class coming out of this. When they realize they had life pretty cush all along. This could be a positive to all of it. All I can say is I'm very thankful for sticking with my non-tourist based job all this time. It finally paid off. It feels good to be on the up-side for once. I feel very lucky.

These morons look like zombies. Except zombies might be more intelligent. At least their reason for beating on windows makes sense. They want to eat the humans inside so they can survive. |
Where to begin with catching up? I only just realized that my last post didn't cover the week prior to it so I have to go way back. My last post was on my last day at Careplus/Brewster. Two days later, I started at Action and found out that Brewster gave everyone the raises they were offered. After lies and no information, it finally happened. I'd be making that $22.55/hr right now. But do I regret leaving. Not a bit. I know I made the right decision. I'm so much happier with Action right now. It's not perfect, but it's better than the way we were treated by Brewster and Careplus. I also think that company will be short-lived in North Conway. I'd be very surprised if they make it through the two years left on the contract. I know for sure that Action has 5 years in the OVMA.
The last day at North Conway Ambulance was pretty uneventful. All of those things you plan to do on your last day didn't happen. I was a good employee down to the last second of my 8.5+ years of employment. I put together a fun collage on Facebook. The post is public so you can see it HERE even if we aren't friends. I also added the goat screaming video which you can see here on YouTube. There were good times there.
We got to drive the new Brewster ambulance which was a fun drive. The radios sucked bad. A crew drove up from Weymouth, MA to fix them, watched me do a failed radio test, then left without fixing them. I was really glad this was my last day dealing with this horrible company.

A photo from a year ago that Jeff sent me this week |
Jeff and I both left North Conway Ambulance for Action. Even though we aren't partners anymore, we still work the same days, but opposite bases. I think we've seen each other every shift, though.
My first shift at Action was so weird since it was the very first day we took over the 911 contract at 7am. I was there to watch Careplus (North Conway Ambulance) leave as Action took over. I was there 5 years ago with Careplus on the day we moved into that base so it was strange to witness them leave.

I was in the yellow truck for 2 years with Rob and in the red truck for 1.5 years with Shawn and then at the track. |

Sitting in my new Wednesday truck watching Action arrive. |
Scott Lees is my new Wednesday partner, and I like working with him. He's a new AEMT so we'll be in the same boat together in a few weeks if/when I pass my written and practical exams. We both had the same feeling that day. It felt like Careplus was completely gone. It was like they were totally wiped clean. The base feels totally different now. Like a clean slate. And the Wednesday crew so pleasant to be around. I feel like the base is now filled with intelligent people when I'm there. So many brain cells! Haha.
Mondays at the Ossipee Base have been a different story, but I'm only referring to the person who has been my Monday partner the last two weeks. Luckily, I will have a new partner from here on out. We just didn't jive at all. I found his "bedside manner" to be absolutely horrible, and I feel like he has no business being in this field beyond being a firefighter. While I agree that most junkies won't make it long in life, they still deserve the same treatment/care as any other patient. They deserve to be listened to and treated with care. He didn't feel the same way. I can't work with someone like that. I also can't work with someone who thinks it's ok to show up an hour late for work and then do a half-assed truck check. Granted this week, I had my bestie, Marissa, with me as a trainee so we were fine doing the truck check without him, but he still should have done more for his own knowledge. I'm so glad I'm not working with him. My new partner is a 19 year old who has only been an EMT for a year and just got his AEMT license this week. I'm actually ok with this. I like him...even if I'm old enough to be his mom...and he's only 5 years older than John. Haha. So far he seems like a good kid, and I've gotten a good vibe from him. I think we'll do ok working together. He's very gung-ho and not jaded like this last one. I mean, if you can call being an EMT for 6.5 years long enough to be jaded.
So speaking of Marissa. Marissa is my AEMT class friend. I'm so excited she got to train with me. It's so nice to have a woman friend here finally. We don't hang out or anything, but we hit it off right away first day of the AEMT class. I wish we had had more than a fire alarm call before she left, but it was still fun getting to train her and hangout. We love to take selfies and post them on FB. We did two of them last Monday. Haha.

We even got to work at the hospital together one day. Haha. |
Action has been very refreshing. I know some people aren't happy with them since the pay isn't equal for anyone. But other than that, it is SO MUCH better than Careplus. They hold you to much higher standards, like completed truck checks and chores. Completed reports before you leave your shift. All things I have ALWAYS done anyway. Supervisors/managers are present and actually do their jobs unlike my previous ones who were just there for the paycheck. Issues are addressed immediately. They have implemented two cool apps for us to use to make our jobs easier. We immediately got a dumpster at the Tamworth base. This is huge if you recall my post about the piles of trash and maggots crawling across the floor when it was Careplus. Pagers and radios that work. New mattresses! Co-workers who do their jobs.
With private ambulance, though, there will always be issues. The trucks are just ok. Supplies are getting better, but they need improvement. But they are seriously working on it. They have hired a few people they should not have. The ONLY thing I don't like is the use of EzPCR for our reporting system. It's beyond awful. I spent nearly an hour and 45 minutes past the end of my shift doing a report for a lift assist! A report that should have taken 5 minutes! No lie. This program deleted my patient information twice which meant I had to input it three times. It came up with errors that I corrected FIVE times. Finally I'd had it when my last error just said this...
A sphincter says what?? (Yes, I still do Wayne's World quotes). WHAT required field? I texted my supervisor who immediately fixed it for me. But come on?! I'm baffled by the use of this program instead of New Hampshire's reporting system Temsis. How could anybody think EzPCR is a good system. They paid me nearly 2 hours of overtime due to its glitches.
Just one more superficial complaint about Action. The uniforms. No such thing as women's sizes. Seriously? In 2020, we can't think to give women uniforms in women's sizes. The shirts fit like dresses. The sleeves have to be rolled up. We look ridiculous. Step up to 2020, please!
Overall, though, I'm very happy at Action so far. I still feel like I made the right decision by switching over to work for them. The vibe is good. I've already met the owner. I didn't meet the owner of Careplus until I had been working there 7.5 years! I feel like the kinks are getting worked out quickly, and I'm looking forward to getting AEMT license and working for them at a higher level. I'm definitely scared about that, as well, but still looking forward to it.

At Memorial. Scott and I had the first 911 call for the new contract. Chris and Jeff were right behind us with the 2nd one. |

I love the hat...but once again, only men's size. |
I've been working at the hospital 2 days a week, only 4-hour shifts. I wanted to work 3 days, but the sign-up for shifts is on paper and two other people keep beating everyone else to the sign-up and taking ALL the shifts. Kind of annoying, but to be fair, one of them was completely out of work prior to this so I'm happy letting her work the shifts. I was doing the morning shifts, but I hated rushing from one job to the next so I switched it to the afternoon shift. I really liked working in the testing/triage tent. We weren't super busy but busy enough that it was interesting. Now, I've been switched to the big tent for Covid-19 patients (suspected) who walk in to the ED. It has been super boring.
The last time I worked in the triage tent was pretty good, even though we weren't busy. There's an RN in the ED I always thought was a huge jerk, and it ended up being just the two of us in the tent. We ended up sharing our stories and getting to know each other. For the first time since Sept 11, 2001, I finally had someone with a similar experience to me. He was a mechanic for United in Boston on 9/11. I was a flight attendant for Delta on 9/11. We both lost our jobs after that and it changed the course of both of our lives. Funny that it landed us here working together in the middle of another crisis in totally different roles than before. I was thankful to finally get to know this guy after all of these years.
One thing I have enjoyed at the hospital are all the yummy snacks people have brought in to share with us. This was my favorite from the local Comfort Inn kitchen.
Starbucks has been giving first responders/healthcare workers a free tall coffee. I decided to be funny and put all of my IDs on just to be sure I qualified. Haha. (I don't have an Action ID).
A few downsides to life in the pandemic... dry hands!!
And the worst of all... I had to cut my nails! From this...

My hands just look old without my acrylics and gel polish! |
I've also stopped wearing my bracelets, necklace and all, but one, rings. They could easily catch and hold the virus. I have new stuff lined up and ready to go, though, when it's time. By the way, did I mention that I lost my tree necklace early winter? It fell off somewhere. I'm still devastated. I wore it everyday for almost 12 years. I could easily order a new one from Tarma Designs, but I'm going to try something different for awhile.
And finally, my giving a fuck about my diet has really gone out the window, along with all upper body strength training. I'm deep into the 50% easter candy, cookies and other carb-o-licious crap. I just don't have any desire or time to spend hours in the kitchen every night that I used to. And I'm just not feeling the upper body stuff right now. I feel like my routine has been so disrupted by the job change/additions that I'm out of it mentally for that. I will get back into both better and eating and upper body work when my job at Memorial ends. That's my goal.
The part I know you've all been waiting for!! The part where I talk about running!! I knew it! I knew you'd be excited. I definitely won't go into details with this since most runs have been boring and on the road. More details for the trail runs and virtual races.
So I've been doing quite a few virtual races lately. I'll be honest. I thought virtual races were really stupid... until now. My opinion has completely changed. Not only do you get the workout-feel of a real race, it's actually 10x harder. It's the biggest mental challenge without competitors, and I've found that I really suck at it. Badly.
My first virtual race was on March 22nd (my former wedding anniversary) in place of the Cabin Fever Snowshoe 10K race I was going to do at Waterville Valley. I already wrote about this in the last post, but here it is again. I decided to run from Coleman's through Cranmore Shores, to Conway Village and back. I felt like I was running harder than I had at Lone Gull last fall where I ran a 39:29. Today...42:51. OUCH. I ran faster in November when I was in AGONY from hip bursitis. 301ft of elevation gain.
The following week was the first race in the Run Free Grand Prix Virtual Race Series. This one is more competitive than a USATF-NE Grand Prix since it includes many elites around the country. I put together a non-competitive team of 4 New England women and one from Colorado. This first race was 10K, as well. I decided to run it on the Mountain Division Trail in Fryeburg. Little did I know that the trail would still be covered in ice right at the mile mark. This meant a quick change of many out-and-backs to make it a 10K. I was actually very happy with one since I ran a 40:42. For "racing" solo, I was pretty happy to run such a decent time. Ended up 5th master female for the results.
On April 5th, I decided to test out a 5K for Millenium's Virtual 5K race series. Since I had just run a 19:36 on that really hard course in Portland, I figured I'd run an easy sub-20 5K. Yeah, well, felt like I was running sub-19 and barely got under 20 with a 19:55. And this was NOT hilly. I went back to the Mountain Division Trail in Fryeburg. This virtual race thing was seriously turning out to be my new challenge... that I'm continuing to fail at! I was 5th overall female for this week's 5K.
April 11th was the 2nd race in the Run Free Grand Prix Series. I immediately regretted my decision not to do the 1-mile race on the track since nearly everyone else in the series did. Instead it was back to the Mountain Division Trail on what I thought would be the "flat" part. Well, when racing the mile, even the slightest incline makes a difference. I had a tail wind for the first .4 miles then ended up hitting some of a headwind for the second half mile. Completed it with finishing on an uphill. Poor planning. My watch stopped at 05:59.98. Strava AND Garmin Connect both rounded it up to 6:00:00...and so did the race! I was pissed. Since when does any race ever round up?! Grrr. I so wish I had redone it the next day on the track.
Even when I was sick as a dog for the Millen Mile in 2017, I still ran a 5:55 for the mile. Huge mistake on my part by choosing that for my course.
So, today, April 18th, I decided to attempt a better 5K since I'm also participating in the White Mountain Miler's Virtual 5K. It's not due until April 25th, but I thought I could definitely run faster than the last one. I chose a slightly flatter course on Whittier Rd in Tamworth. I ran so hard I thought I was going to puke. Literally ran the effort I would in a race only to fail again with a 20:04! OMG. Ok, then. How about my slowest 5K since ummmm 2010. No lie! Granted it was chilly and I had a headwind for the way back, but the effort! Puking effort should not be a 20:04. So this will count towards this weekend's Millennium 5K and I'll give the 5K one more go next Thursday for Friday. It's the 5K for the Run Free Grand Prix, and if it's faster than 19:55, I can use it for the White Mountain Miler's 5K, too. I'm not holding my breath after today, though. I suck REALLY bad at this virtual race crap. Haha. Way more challenging than I ever expected. But super motivating at least.
Week March 23-29- 14.1 miles! Yes, total. After the weekend, I noticed some pain in the left knee area.
I had hardly been running. How could I have an injury. I felt it most when twisting so I thought I might have hurt it twisting during the ski race. But I had no idea. I did my usual spin bike Peloton ride on Monday and it proceeded to get worse all day. By Tuesday, I attempted to run a mile with John only to have sharp, shooting pain there. The miles I had planned after our run turned into a very low motivation spin bike ride. I ended up sticking to the spin bike Peloton workouts thru Friday and miraculously, the pain was gone by Saturday. It's been gone ever since. Phew.
Monday- Spin Bike Power Zone Ride w/Christine. 30 minutes.
Tuesday- 0.9 miles. Run with John and the dogs. Knee pain excruciating. 10:13. 91ft of gain.
Spin Bike- HIIT Ride w/Robin. 30 minutes.
Wednesday- Spin Bike Tabata Ride w/Tunde. 20 minutes.
Thursday- Spin Bike HIIT & Hills w/ Olivia. 45 minutes.
Friday- Spin Bike Climb Ride w/Christine. 45 minutes.
Saturday- 6.2 miles. Run Free Grand Prix 10K. 40:42. 221ft of elevation gain. Cooled down by walking back to the car for almost a mile.
Sunday- 7 miles. Cold pouring rain so I opted for the treadmill. 53:45. 7:41 avg pace.
Week March 30-April 5- I was able to get the miles up, but I ended up taking 2 zero days. I hadn't had a zero day (no workouts at all) since February 10th. I had planned to run Wednesday, but since I had to get up earlier for my first day at Action, it just didn't happen. Pretty happy to end up with 46.4 miles for the week with 2 zeros. 2,405ft of gain.
Tuesday- 10.6 miles. Ran from home through Conway Village and up West Side and Passaconaway then back home. 1:18:44. 7:25 avg pace. 273ft of elevation gain. Ended up racing this kid who was on the opposite side of the road as me. I was trying to get past him so I could get back to that side, but as soon as I caught him he sped up. It was annoying, but a good workout for almost a mile. He really needs to be smarter, though. He was wearing all black, running WITH traffic and with headphones. Way too trusting of drivers.
Thursday- 9 miles. Just felt like doing a treadmill workout. 3x2-miles. 2 mile warm up.
3x2-mile: 13:02, 12:56, 12:46.
0.3 mile rest in between.
0.5 mile cool down
1:02:31. 6:57 avg pace.
Friday- 10 miles. Treadmill again due to weather. 1:16:39. 7:40avg pace. Watched Hunters on Amazon Prime.
Saturday-10.4 miles. My first trail of the Spring! Yay! Completely clear up Twilight Zone until I got to the top of Middle Mt where the trail was 100% ice/snow. Very little running in miles 5 and 6 due to this. I didn't bring microspikes so I had to walk most of it. The rest was great. Saw way too many people on the Middle Mt trail. Got off the beaten path as soon as I could. Clear trails the whole way back. Felt so good to be back on the trail. 2:09:59. 1,971ft of elevation gain. I was so happy to see the orange chair still on the trail. It's something I look forward to seeing every spring. I was actually getting anxious worrying it wouldn't be there.
Sunday- 6.3 miles. Millenium Virtual 5K. 19:55. Perfect weather.
Week April 6-12- 50 miles! Yay. Finally got back to 50 miles with two zeros. That wasn't easy, but I did it. 4,062ft of elevation gain. Zero on Monday and Wednesday. The extra early wake up for work has been difficult to adjust to to get up and run or spin, but I'm getting back into it.
Tuesday- 10.7 miles. 1:23:22. 7:47 avg pace. 874ft of elevation gain. Conway/Madison Loop. Boring as hell.
Thursday- 10.6 miles. 1:20:47. 7:37 avg pace. 298ft of elevation gain. Conway Village- Passaconaway again.
Friday- 11.4 miles. 1:32:02. 8:04 avg pace. 886ft of elevation gain. Felt very meh. Tough to get through this run. Probably because I'm so sick of it. Cranmore Shores. Tasker Hill/Allard Hill out-and-back.
Saturday- 6.4 miles. Run Free Grand Prix Mile on the Mountain Division Trail in Fryeburg. 1-mile warmup. 4.4 mile easy run after. 05:59.98 for the mile, and I'm sticking to it. Haha.
Sunday- 10.8 miles. 2:05:06. 1,909ft of elevation gain. It had snowed quite a bit on Thursday, so snow still lingered on the backside of Rattlesnake and backside of Peaked. Had plans to run up the Black Cap Connector to the Mason Brook Trail, but turned around due to too much snow making it slow. Skipped all the summits due to snow, but still had to run in a bit of it.
I'll do this week's running in my next post since it's Saturday right now and I have one more day of running left since the real week is Mon-Sun. 😁
Most of my walks with John have been short and nothing too exciting. We don't have time for walks on M-Th since I'm working all 4 days.
Other random photos from the last 2.5 weeks...
Saw this ad on FB.
This was the first thing that came to mind. Haha.
First deck coffee of spring. Cut short when Conway went out for a code. I decided to head to the station in case a 2nd call came in. And it did just before I got there. Jumped in the truck to the call. Guy was tweaking out on something and it ended up being a police matter. Hung out for a few hours with the guys to chat and do my report. Any "quick" trip to the fire station ends up as 2 hours minimum. Haha.
Bought my own eye protection to bring to work. The goggles in our supply aren't cutting it.
Worked a 12 hour overnight at Conway on Sunday. Josh just had to leave a huge bag of candy on the desk. I have no control and ate 1/3 of it.
Got in bed and had fallen asleep when Mel's message wakes me up. It's a screenshot of this...
So I call the police to let them know it's my dog but that I'm at Conway Fire for the night and can't get him. John and I both try to get ahold of Bryan to no avail. The police officer calls me back and acts like a total ass to me since I can't pick up Chill. The station is less than a mile from the station so I tell him he can bring to me and Chill can sleep in my car. At this point, it's midnight, and I'm out at 6am. He gets really pissed off and says something about Chill having ticks then says he's just taking him to the shelter. Why the fuck am I getting treated like this is my fault? I was so mad. I couldn't go back to sleep until like 2:30. I was up at 5am and exhausted for my 24 hour shift in Ossipee at 7am. Thanks, Bryan! Grrr.
Speaking of Bryan, he's now riding around town on a bicycle pulling a bike trailer... with Chill following. EVERYONE has seen him and has a story. It's pretty funny, actually. Well, except the part about Chill running in the road, but he's been good about keeping him off the road after I told him my coworkers saw Chill in the road. He literally looks like the town hobo now. And he's still throwing trash in my yard.
A tree fell across my driveway. Luckily part if it cracked when it fell so I could drive around it. The rest of it was wedged in between two other trees so I couldn't drag it out of the way. I wasn't paying big $ for a chainsaw so I bought an ax thinking easy peasy I could chop it in 5 minutes. Well, 45 minutes in the rain, drenched in sweat and blistered hands, I finally had it chopped. That was way more work than I expected. Since I was basically doing squats for the entire time, I was insanely sore for days after. Haha. I'm rethinking the chainsaw thing if this happens again.
I'm getting tired so I'm pretty sure I've forgotten some stuff I wanted to write, but I think I got most of it in in the first part. Headed into another week of work at Action and Memorial. I wonder how long the Memorial job will last. I honestly doubt it will go past 2 more weeks. I like working there, but I'm ready to have my days back. If Club Motorsports starts up again anytime soon, I'm going to be working for the detail ambulance company they have hired called Great Brook EMS. It only does events so the pay *should* be really good. I like doing track shifts once a week, but if the pay is extra good then I'll probably do two. I'm not counting on races anytime soon so I don't mind working weekends right now. But we'll see. Orientation is next weekend.
I'm scheduled for my AEMT practical on May 3rd. I'm hoping to do my written exam either this week or next at SOLO. If not, I'll have to travel up to Whitefield for it on May 5th. Either way, if I pass both, I'll have my AEMT NH license by the second week of May. But like I said, that's IF I pass.
Meanwhile I'm just carrying on like nothing has changed even though everything around me has.
Monday- Spin Bike Power Zone Ride w/Christine. 30 minutes.

Chill thinks he can catch a chipmunk like this. |
